Er heiratet seine Freundin Jane und versucht erfolglos, seine Schwester Marie und Shlink zu einer gemeinsamen Heirat zu bewegen. Aufgrund krimineller Gesch\u00e4fte gelangt Garga f\u00fcr drei Jahre ins Gef\u00e4ngnis. Als er zur\u00fcckkehrt, versucht er Shlink mit allen Mitteln von sich fern zu halten. Als dieser ihn jedoch aufsucht, nehmen die beiden sofort wieder ihre enge Beziehung zueinander auf. Shlink gesteht Garga seine Liebe, Garga reagiert darauf mit Ekel und trennt sich ein zweites Mal von Shlink, welcher sich kurz darauf suizidiert. Entgegen der Erwartung, dass in einem Kampf beide Beteiligte versuchen, den jeweils anderen zu dominieren, vollzieht Shlink jedoch gleich zu Beginn eine radikale Selbstunterwerfung: \u201eVon heute ab, Mr. Garga, lege ich mein Geschick in Ihre H\u00e4nde. [\u2026] Von heute ab bin ich Ihre Kreatur. [\u2026]\u201c (S. 67). Shlink befolgt nun tats\u00e4chlich alle Befehle Gargas, so sehr sie ihm auch selbst schaden. Dieses Verhalten unterwandert die simple Unterwerfungslogik eines patriarchalen Machtkampfes und verunsichert Garga zunehmend: Indem er sich Shlink gegen\u00fcber dominant verh\u00e4lt, folgt er erstens ganz den von Shlink festgelegten \u201aSpielregeln\u2018, zweitens kann er seine \u00dcberlegenheit nicht unter Beweis stellen, da Shlink diese \u00fcberhaupt nicht herausfordert, und drittens scheint Shlink aus der unterw\u00fcrfigen Rolle Lust zu ziehen, weshalb Garga ihn nicht dem\u00fctigen kann, ohne ihm gleichzeitig einen Dienst zu erweisen: \u201eGARGA: [\u2026] Ich lache \u00fcber Sie! Habe ich mich denn in Sie so verbissen? [\u2026]\u201c (S. 75). Diese Aussage zeigt, auf welcher Ebene sich der Kampf noch bewegt: W\u00e4hrend Shlink Garga ausdr\u00fccklich zum Zentrum (zur \u201eSonne\u201c) seiner Welt macht, wehrt Garga sich gegen sein eigenes Begehren nach Shlink (seine \u201aVerbissenheit\u2018). Dieses Begehren und die Beziehung als Ganzes sind eindeutig auch erotisch konnotiert: \u201eGARGA (im Schlafraum): \u201aIch nenne ihn meinen h\u00f6llischen Gemahl in meinen Tr\u00e4umen\u2018, Shlink, den Hund. [\u2026]\u201c (S. 74). Auch die doppeldeutigen Kommentare anderer Figuren (\u201eMANKY: [\u2026] Sie sagen, er habe etwas mit einem Gelbh\u00e4utigen [\u2026]\u201c, S. 70) verst\u00e4rken diesen Eindruck. Was Garga in dem Kampf trotz seiner vordergr\u00fcndigen Machtposition zu verlieren hat, ist also (im Vokabular des St\u00fccks) seine \u201aUnschuld\u2018, d.h. die Unkenntnis \u00fcber sein eigenes Begehren. Shlink macht seine Absicht, Garga mit diesem Begehren zu konfrontieren, explizit: \u201eSHLINK: [\u2026] es ist mir ein Bed\u00fcrfnis, Sie mit Ihren Neigungen bekannt zu machen\u201c (S. 76).<\/p><p>Diese Neigungen sind f\u00fcr Garga deswegen problematisch, da sie seinen heteronormativen Lebensentwurf sowie seine hegemonial m\u00e4nnliche Identit\u00e4t in Frage stellen. Zum Tabu der gleichgeschlechtlichen Beziehung kommen auch noch der Altersunterschied, die ethnische Differenz und das Tabu des lustvollen Machtgef\u00e4lles hinzu. Garga versucht sich Shlink daher durch eine \u00fcberst\u00fcrzte Heirat mit Jane zu entziehen: \u201eGARGA: [\u2026] Leider ist f\u00fcr Sie momentan kein Stuhl frei, Shlink. [\u2026] Es ist angenehm, ich w\u00fcnsche meine Abende in dieser meiner Familie zu verbringen. Ich bin in ein neues Lebensalter getreten. [\u2026]\u201c (S. 79). Diese Flucht in das heteronormative Familiengl\u00fcck scheitert jedoch. Zum einen wird die Ehe durch einen dreij\u00e4hrigen Gef\u00e4ngnisaufenthalt Gargas unterbrochen, zum anderen geht sie danach sofort in die Br\u00fcche: \u201eJANE: [\u2026] Es ist nicht richtig zwischen uns, das wei\u00dft du. Ich gehe jetzt, George. [\u2026]\u201c (S. 84). Shlink gelingt es dagegen, wieder seine enge Beziehung zu Garga aufzunehmen. Bis zuletzt bleibt Gargas Abwehrhaltung gegen sein eigenes Begehren der zentrale Konflikt zwischen den beiden M\u00e4nnern. Als Shlink ihm erstmals explizit seine Liebe gesteht, st\u00f6\u00dft Garga ihn von sich: \u201eSHLINK: Verleugne nicht, was war, Garga! Sieh nicht nur die Rechnung. Erinnere dich der Frage, die wir stellten. Nimm dich zusammen: ich liebe dich. GARGA (betrachtet ihn): Aber wie widerlich von Ihnen! [\u2026]\u201c (S. 86). Garga verl\u00e4sst Shlink daraufhin ein zweites Mal. Shlink begeht Suizid, Garga fl\u00fcchtet nach New York. Den Traum vom Familienleben hat er aufgegeben, er idealisiert stattdessen nun die Einsamkeit: \u201eGARGA [\u2026]: Allein sein ist eine gute Sache. Das Chaos ist aufgebraucht [\u2026]\u201c (S. 89).<\/p><p>Ein \u00fcbergeordnetes Thema des St\u00fccks ist somit die Konfrontation der heteronormativen Ordnung (repr\u00e4sentiert durch Garga und sein Umfeld) mit queerem Begehren und die daraus resultierende Verleugnung dieses Begehrens. Der Kampf der beiden M\u00e4nner l\u00e4sst sich als Kampf Gargas gegen seine eigenen uneingestandenen Neigungen lesen. Queer ist das St\u00fcck au\u00dferdem insofern, als dass es durchgehend eine Verunsicherung von bin\u00e4ren Kategorien wie passiv\/aktiv, m\u00e4chtig\/machtlos oder lustvoll\/schmerzhaft vornimmt. Trotz Shlinks absoluter Unterwerfung bleibt es vollkommen unklar, wem eigentlich die Machtposition zukommt, und wer sich wem \u201aopfert\u2018. Die simplen Logiken der heteronormativen Ordnung gehen pl\u00f6tzlich nicht mehr auf \u2013 so kann sich Garga im Kampf mit Shlink etwa nicht mehr einfach auf das Referenzsystem eines m\u00e4nnlichen Machtkampfes mit eindeutigen Zielen und klaren Rollenverteilungen verlassen. Je st\u00e4rker Garga Shlink erniedrigt und je mehr Lust er aus seiner dominanten Rolle zieht, desto st\u00e4rker l\u00e4sst er sich gleichzeitig auf die erotisierte Beziehung ein, und desto mehr Lust beschert er Shlink.
